Last Friday, the CEIAM conducted a technical visit to the PSJ Cobre Mendocino Project, located in Uspallata, Las Heras Department. The visit was part of the evaluation process of the Project’s EIR, in compliance with current provincial regulations in Mendoza.

The commission is composed of specialists from various fields, including geology, hydrogeology, biology, environmental engineering, and environmental law, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of the Project. The entities represented in CEIAM include: the Mining Directorate, the Environmental Protection Directorate, the Directorate of Biodiversity and Ecopark, the Territorial Planning Directorate, the General Department of Irrigation, the National University of Cuyo, the Provincial Environmental Council, the National Technological University – Mendoza Regional Faculty, the Conicet Mendoza Scientific and Technological Center (CCT), and the Municipality of Las Heras.

Representatives of PSJ Cobre Mendocino highlighted the importance of this visit as part of their commitment to transparency and responsible mining development in Mendoza. “We value the work of CEIAM in this process and reaffirm our commitment to sustainable mining, aligned with provincial legislation and international standards,” the company stated.

A key project for mining in Mendoza

PSJ Cobre Mendocino has adapted its EIR to the latest environmental standards, ensuring strict compliance with Law 7722. The project will use a conventional flotation process with biodegradable reagents and promote the responsible use of water.

The initiative is expected to drive regional economic growth, with an estimated investment of USD 559 million and the creation of more than 3,900 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase.

The project also aims to strengthen the local value chain through training programs and the hiring of suppliers and workers from Uspallata and Las Heras.

Evaluation and next steps

Following the visit, CEIAM will continue analyzing the EIR, assessing the information contained in the document and the various reports included in the file. As part of the process, a public hearing will be held, in addition to the ongoing public consultation, to guarantee citizen participation and community access to information.

With this evaluation stage underway, PSJ Cobre Mendocino is consolidating itself as a key project for the development of mining in Mendoza, aligned with the energy transition and the region’s sustainable economic growth.
